The Trespass Performance Residency is a bi-annual Future Tenant occurrence. The series offers three separate artists or groups a chance to reside in the Future Tenant space for one week in order to practice, plan, and create new work. At the end of each residency, the artist or group puts on a public performance of the created new work. This summer Future Tenant presents:
Fools of Transport by Laurie Shapiro and Hannah Thompson: “Fools of Transport” will be performed FRIDAY, AUGUST 19, from 7-10PM. The residency will culminate with a performance and installation using various elements to mock the absurdities of looking into our future. Performances will take place within an installation – viewers will experience sculpture and dark, curving tunnels before being led into a brightly lit spaces, where a “live oracle” will perform, encouraging interaction with viewers. The ultimate intent of the performance and installation is to suggest the need for a person to manifest his or her own future.
Studies in Time and Image: SATURDAY, AUGUST 18 AT 7PM, Eclectic Laboratory Chamber Orchestra (ELCO) and Shana Simmons Dance will present a new, full-length work incorporating dance and music to explore the themes of time and memory. Featuring original choreography by Shana Simmons and original music by ELCO Artistic Director David Matthews, along with work by other composers, the performance will use the intimate environment of Future Tenant, with dancers and musicians surrounding the audience, to explore space as an essential act of composition. The work promises to be provocative, yet accessible, with a deep commitment to reaching a wide audience while maintaining the utmost artistic integrity. An open rehearsal will be held FRIDAY, AUGUST 17 AT 7PM.
The Happy Factory by Laura Zorch and Laura Odegaard: “Laura and Laura” will spend the residency week manufacturing moments of happiness for the public through pop-up happenings (happy-nings) Monday through Thursday. The evening of FRIDAY, AUGUST 24 at 7PM, the public will be invited to work with Laura and Laura to create happiness in the form of gifts to be exchanged at the culminating Happy Factory event on Saturday night; there will also be a screening of the film Happy on Friday night.,
SATURDAY, AUGUST 25 from 7-10PM will be the culminating HAPPY FACTORY EVENT. Attendees will participate in: a happiness gift exchange, coloring book collaboration (wall paper sized coloring sheets for public participation), wish making and wish granting, happy idea exchange, and general good times with dancing and frivolity.
The goal of the Happy Factory project is to instigate the general feelings of happiness, intended to spark a chain of pay-it-forward happiness interactions. It will be a participatory art happening, more than performance. Performance elements will play a part in the project, but public interaction and creativity will be encouraged.
